Dalek Evolution 1) The Shape of the Future by Librarian-bot Dalek Evolution 1) The Shape of the Future by Librarian-bot
The war has lasted a 1000 years. The Kaled race is dying, consumed by the poisons unleashed into Skaro's ravaged atmosphere. Soon the only hope of survival will be to accelerate the nascent mutations to their fullest extent, transforming the Kaleds into creatures better fitted to survive in the wastelands.

Deep in the armoured bunkers of the Scientific Elite, the most brilliant Kaled minds have realised that the mutations will lack the physical resilience necessary to thrive and rebuild. They have turned their intellects to creating an environment suit for the children of the war, one that will allow them the freedom to retake their dead planet.

The Mark 1 Travel Machine is the first fully functional prototype. Little more than a life-support tank fitted with sensors and a motive unit, it nevertheless significantly augments the strength, speed and senses of the creature within. Here, in the depths of the Chief Scientist's laboratory, the newly born cyborg makes its first tentative movements...

"I...LIVE!"

-----------------

And the series that all these 'Dalek evolution' variants have been building towards finally gets underway!

Doctor Who and the Daleks are not mine, separately or together.

I somehow find this design is more omniously terrufying than it's successors, and more versatile to

Cheers! I'm still very happy with how this turned out - the original concept(s) are actually quite tricky to square with the later Dalek design, so it look me a while to get it working properly.

My headcanon when I look at this

It is the beginning of the 10th century of the Thal-Kaled War. Dalkis has recently begun the transition of leadership from Chancellor to Supreme. A medic-based scientist, Haskar, realises the potential of the neutronic bomb. His war friend, Vostor, has been crippled and warped by the war. A demonstration will occur

Haskar reveals the clunky Travel machine to his peers. Vostor was blind, limbless and required machinery to maintain his heart, lungs and digestive organs. The mechanical arm gives him the freedom to manipulate, that he lost in the war. The mechanical eye replaces their own, but with depth perception a current issue. The globes replicate touch to a degree, and generate a sort of primitve sonar. Vostor can speak-he tells that there is a sense of claustrophobia, but still a sense of freedom

When the neutronic bombs are launched, Haskar prophesies that the Kaled race has condemned itself to a potential extinction. He hopes that, one day, people will adjust to the Travel Machine, as it is necessary for the mutation they will become. A century later, this prophesy will be fufilled in the darkest way possible

Ray Cusick's original peppar pot brought to life! I think the reason why they didn't go with this design is because there was no room for the operator to sit down ( hence the Daleks unique narrow cone shape)

Y'know, I've seen some really early concept drawings for the Daleks, and one of them actually looked almost EXACTLY like this (albeit with more arms). Was that the basis for your drawing?

Yep! Hm...I wonder where I put my explanation of that...must have been on the WIP shots...

It's a sort of mix between the very earliest Dalek concept (the head is based mostly on that) and a slightly later, though still pillar-box shaped Dalek. The claw is taken from the Movie Daleks.

A very prolonged nuclear/chemical war. At least, that was the underlying cause. The actual catalyst was Davros' genetic engineering, which took the mutations and 'evolved' them to their extreme conclusion - the Dalek creatures.

No...

I hesitate because I'm not sure where or when it was made explicit in the show itself - or if it ever was - but I'm fairly sure they're supposed to be without gender and to reproduce through cloning. They're grown in tanks, or incubators, and are pretty much without any distinguishing features (even Sontarans have some variation - Daleks, not so much).

Certainly, there has never been, to my knowledge, any indication that they have gender.

Well Ive seen the original design for the Dalek that you based this on, so maybe whoever designed the Droid in Star Wars may have based it somewhat on the early Dalek design, who knows, they may have, they may have not.

Oh wow. Is this from Mechmaster? Also is the design based off the old 60s TV-21 comics with the blue Kaleds? This is very cool stuff

:iconlibrarian-bot:

Nope, this isn't from Mechmaster - it's a model I built myself based on the original Dalek sketches that Ray Cusick produced when he started designing them. You can see them here:
[link]

As you can see, Mechmaster build models directly from these designs (and did a magnificent job - his 'very first Dalek' model is superb) whereas I sort of combined them in an effort to produce something that was more obviously a precursor to the Dalek/Mark 3 Travel Machine. The design itself isn't really influenced by the Dalek Chronicles from TV-21, although the colour scheme is.

Thanks for commenting and glad you like it!

It's very impressive and really does look like the original drawings. In a way, these look more alien than the actual Daleks. Or I'm just used to seeing Daleks way more than I should be. ;)

That is no doubt part of it! I think the final design works better, as it happens. It's more...unusual. The angles work better as a war machine too - it points forward, like an ice breaker or, well, a tank.

Well, this isn't a Dalek yet. They only get called that with the Mark 3 Travel Machine.

This is just the first test - the weapons come later...
