Thunderbird 3 - Specs by Librarian-bot Thunderbird 3 - Specs by Librarian-bot
So, TB3.

.....

Yeah, really not a lot to say about this one. It's really quite boring, as Thunderbirds go. Just a big red rocket.

Cup of char, anyone?

Gerry Anderson invented the Thunderbirds.

Is the Thunder fusion reactor meant to be a type of Atomic fusion reactor?

The new tv series has actually done a good job of expanding on TB3's capabilities and it is used a lot more often. The three "struts" are now multi-angled manipulator arms, there are multiple hull mounted cables and grapple lines, a central bay carries support pods/drones, the nose cone opens to deploy various gear (only a drill so far but lots of other options are possible), and its three engines are now atmosphere launch and maneuvering jets built around a central ion engine for main thrust (where the entry hatch is in your version). Its cockpit is now centrally positioned on top of the grey "radiator" section (your thruster array) and is ring shaped around the core.

Mission-wise I'll agree it didn't have much to do.  But in terms of aesthetic... it's probably my favorite.  It's such a beautifully retro design.

You can just picture a ray-gun popping out of the side and having it fly off to fight against flying saucers.

I do know what you mean - it's very much a classic rocket and looks all the better for it.

I always liked this one. No staging, no external fuel tanks. The thruster arrays make it a lot more interesting than a mere rocket. And you have to love the red color.

Nice contempoary design, like the idea of manipulator arms and keeping the docking ring. How do the Tracys board Thunderbird 5? Also where is the flight deck located.

The fight deck is behind the nose, roughly where I've marked 'cockpit' on the specs. Like the original, the ship is built like a skyscraper, so forward is actually 'up' for someone at the controls.

Boarding TB5 is more or less the same as it ever was, only now the docking port is in the cargo bay. The doors open up and a tube extends to meet the airlock on the station.

Pretty cool update. Especially the cargo bay - it's the sort of thing that TB3 should have but was ignored in the original.

Thanks. Yeah, the cargo bay was the main thing I wanted to get in. Never really saw how the original could effect a resuce without something to rescue people with!

Until that useless film came out, as far back as I remember (to watching TBirds with my grandfather in the 60s) it always bothered me as to where TB3's landing gear was. Think it was the only thing in that movie that was any good, good to see on your redux design you've used the same idea.

I thought it was a nice, sensible touch...which is exactly why it stood out of the shoddy knock-off fest that was that film...

But of course! There's even a cut out for it to slide into.
